Oman Issues Verdicts of Jailing Activists and Bloggers due to Expressing their Opinions


ANHRI denounced the verdict, issued on Monday July 9, 2012, of jailing activists for a period of 6 months to a year sentence, due to their participation, last month, in a peaceful demonstrations aims to consolidate with some of the detainees (Ismail El-Mqbaly, Habiba El-Hana’y and Yakob El-Khrowsy) and also for expressing their opinions.
Yesterday, Muscat First Instance Court, issued a prison sentence of six months against “Hamoud El-Rashdy”, as he was accused of “insulting the Sultan”. He lifted a banner and wrote on it some words to the Sultan “Qabous”. “Hamed  El-Khrowsy”, sentenced for a year due to an accusations of “insulting the king”, as he posted a poem on Facebook, in which he mentioned the ruler. “Mahmoud Hamed”, the poet and “Ali El-Mokably”, the activist were also sentenced for a year, due to an accusations of “insulting the Sultan” and violation  “Law on Information Technology Crimes Combating”, due to their call to demonstrate through “Facebook”.
The activists were detained yesterday after the increase of the protests to release three activists who were detained due to the workers’ protests’ in “Fahoud” oil well, last month. A few days later, after the Public Prosecution issuance a statement threating of taking all the legal procedures against whom it described as “offending and incitement writers”. The statement deemed “the freedom of expression, as a mean which is being used by those instigators.
The activists’ lawyer said that “the judge allows the reseal of the detainee for a bond of a thousand RO (2600 USD), and we will appeal”. In the same regard, the court set the day of July 11 to be the day of the sentence in the case, in which a big number of activists are accused, due to their participation in the protests in Oman last month in consolidation with the activists’ detained.
ANHRI said that “the verdicts issued against the activists assures that Oman clearly violates the freedom of opinion and expression and assures the expolite of all the country’s bodies, including the Omani prosecution, which is theoretically independent, to eliminate all the voices calling for freedom”.
ANHRI calls for the immediate release of all the detainees, activists and opinion makers existed in the Omani prisons, due to the expression of their opinions, as it violates all the international and treaties and covenants”.
